With 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Ortman is currently retired, having most recently worked as an associate director of Indiana Agricultural Research Programs from 1989 to 2001. From 1972 to 1989, he served Purdue University as head of the department of entomology and professor of entomology. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Ortman was an assistant in the Entomology Research Division Office in 1971.
Previously, Dr. Ortman held multiple positions at South Dakota State University as professor from 1968 to 1972, associate professor from 1963 to 1968, and assistant professor of entomology from 1961 to 1963. During this time, he excelled with the Northern Grain Insects Research Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the director and leader of investigations from 1968 to 1972 and research entomologist from 1961 to 1968. With a number of notable achievements in his industry, Dr. Ortman's research primarily focused on plant resistance to insects and pest management.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Ortman pursued an education at Tabor College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science at Kansas State University in 1957. Dr. Ortman concluded his studies at Kansas State University in 1963, graduating a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Ortman has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 2001 to 2005, he contributed to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a consultant. Dr. Ortman found success with his written works as well, having authored myriad articles for meetings and general consumption.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Ortman remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Council of Scientific Society Presidents and the Entomological Society of America, the latter of which he also was active as president. Dr. Ortman was also a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Ortman has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Ortman was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Midwest.
