Dr. Calderwood is currently the Morton N. Swartz, MD Academy Professor of Medicine (Microbiology and Immunobiology) at Harvard Medical School and served as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1990-2017. He continues as a physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases and serves as the Director of the Center for Educational Innovation and Scholarship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Calderwood entered Harvard University for his undergraduate studies in 1964, but took a leave of absence between 1965-1968 to serve in the US Army; trained as a paratrooper and Ranger, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He returned to Harvard University in 1968 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in biology, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from that institution in 1971. He then earned a Doctor of Medicine degree (AOA) from Harvard Medical School in 1975, followed by three years of internship and residency training in Internal Medicine and two years of Infectious Diseases subspecialty fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1981, he was selected to serve as Chief Resident in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in the subspecialty of Infectious Diseases since 1978 and 1980, respectively, and licensed to practice medicine by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 1978.
Dr. Calderwood joined the faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital and at Harvard Medical School in 1982. Between 1983-1985, he served as the Fellowship Training Program Director in Infectious Diseases and between 1983-1990, as Clinical Director in Infectious Diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1990, he was appointed as the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital and served in that role until 2017. Between 2001-2008, he also served as Associate Chief of Medicine for Education and between 2008-2015 as Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Between 2006-2017, he served as Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and since 2016, has served as the inaugural Director of the Center for Educational Innovation and Scholarship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Calderwood's research interests have focused primarily on the pathogenesis of cholera, the immune responses that follow this infection and provide protection, molecular evolution of the bacterium causing cholera, human genetic factors that predispose to cholera, and the development and testing of cholera vaccines; his research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and done in close collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (icddrb) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, under the US International Collaborations in Infectious Disease Research program of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. His research is described in more than 215 original research publications and he has published another 50 reviews, chapters, clinical articles and editorials. He served on the Bacteriology and Mycology-1 Study Section of the National Institutes of Health between 1994-1998, and chaired that Study Section between 1996-1998. He served as a member of the U.S.-Japan Panel on Cholera and Other Related Bacterial Enteric Infections of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program between 2012-2017, and served as Chair of that Panel between 2015-2017.
Dr. Calderwood has served in many leadership roles for the national Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), including serving on the Board of Directors in 2007-2010 and 2012-2016, serving as President of IDSA in 2014-2015 and as Chair of the Board of Directors of the IDSA Education and Research Foundation in 2015-2016. He has also served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Infectious Diseases section of UpToDate, the world's leading evidence-based and physician-authored clinical decision support resource, since 1997. He has served on the Scientific Advisory Boards or as a consultant to several companies involved in infectious disease research and development.
Dr. Calderwood has been elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; he has also been elected to membership in the Association of American Physicians. In 2012, he received the William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School, in 2014, the John T. Potts, Jr., MD Faculty Mentoring Award from the Massachusetts General Hospital, and in 2015, the Partners Medical Education Outstanding Mentor Award from Partners Healthcare. In 2017, he received: the Walter E. Stamm Mentor Award from IDSA, in recognition of an individual who has served as an exemplary mentor throughout their career in Infectious Diseases; the Kenneth Kaplan Infectious Diseases Clinician Award from the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society, in recognition of excellence in all facets of the practice and teaching of clinical infectious diseases; and the Joseph B. Martin Dean's Leadership Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty, for commitment to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Calderwood is listed in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
