Enjoying a very successful and rewarding 56-year career, Dr. Hess retired from San Francisco State University as a professor of nursing in 2005. Teaching on campus for 39 years, she formerly taught for one year as an instructor at the University of Michigan before accepting an opportunity at San Francisco. Dr. Hess was also an adjunct professor at the University of California extension, San Francisco, between 1977 and 1985. Since retirement, she has taught as an adjunct assistant professor at the School of Nursing at Samuel Merritt University in California from 2007 to 2008 and was the assistant director of the associate degree to bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) program at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in San Mateo, CA, from 2010 to 2013. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Hess was a staff nurse at University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH, from 1961 to 1962 and head nurse of Springbrook Health Clinic (pilot study for Medicare) at Mount Sinai Hospital, also in Cleveland, from 1962 to 1965.
A longstanding member of the American Nurses Association, the Gerontological Society of America and the American Society on Aging, among others, Dr. Hess is also affiliated with Phi Beta Delta. During the course of her career, she has contributed multiple articles to peer-reviewed journals and chapters to books on various topics in nursing. She is an eight-time recipient of a Book of the Year Award through the American Journal of Nursing for her book "Toward Healthy Aging," a definitive, comprehensive source for health promotion and health maintenance in gerontologic nursing education. Dr. Hess co-authored the first eight editions of the book with a colleague. Dr. Hess also co-authored "Understanding the Aging Patient" in 1977.
Dr. Hess has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Nursing and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare since 1990. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, Master of Science from the University of Colorado and Doctor of Philosophy from Walden University. She is certified in gerontology through Holy Names College in Oakland, CA, received a certificate as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner from University of California School of Nursing and School of Medicine, and was then certified by The California State Board of Nursing.
