Having retired in 2016, Dr. Lowinsky was named professor emeritus by York University, having taught history on campus since the late 1970s, and social science (and, in particular, social and political thought) and writing on campus since the late 1980s. Still teaching students on a part-time basis and engaged in research and writing, he is an expert in U.S. history and U.S. foreign policy. Indeed, his research includes American and German history and politics, international relations, and digital technology and the metamorphosis of our institutions, values and language. While teaching widely and intensely in three different yet overlapping disciplines, he has also developed new courses. One of them, a course in historiography--the study of the history of history--involved the evolution and refinement of different schools of historical thought and varying, if not clashing, historical interpretations, while another illuminated those seminal, cataclysmic movements, origins, and ideas that lay at the heart of those contradictory forces, giving rise to modernity. In the process, Dr. Lowinsky has expanded and intensified his pedagogical approach to and intellectual perspective on history and its indispensable connection to the eclectic and interdisciplinary nature of social science, while making the sharpening of critical skills in thinking, reading and writing an important part of his pedagogy and research.
Becoming involved in his profession because he believed that history was an important discipline to acquire knowledge about the world around us, Dr. Lowinsky noted that history addresses every aspect of other fields that we take for granted. Coming from an academic family, he was also immersed in political and intellectual discourse and thought, which also greatly impacted his desire to study the field as an adult. During his career, Dr. Lowinsky has been active on the board of education and special education committee dealing with students and children who had a range of disabilities and those who were intellectually gifted. He was also actively involved in a number of university committees and bargaining committees that fostered and eventually consummated negotiations between the University and its faculty members.
Dr. Lowinsky has authored a number of articles in scholarly journals that pertain to history, education, and our metamorphosed institutions, values and language, thanks to the underside of digital technology. It is this consequential need to transcend our electronic barriers that makes it necessary for us to embrace "Thinking Beyond Electronic Borders: Global Ideas, Global Values", the title of an incisive and seminal article, authored by Dr. Lowinsky in 2017. Indeed, he continues to study and research American-German relations before and after Trump's ascent to the Presidency of the U.S., and the intensification and globalization of computer/digital technology and their impact upon our lives and institutions. He is also a longtime member of the Canadian Society for the Study of Practical Ethics and an elected fellow of McLaughlin College.
Dr. Lowinsky earned a Bachelor of Education in education at the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Arts in history at the University of Chicago and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in history at York University. He is also certified in the German language which reflects his proficiency in German. This has richly enabled him not only to study German and Political Science at Goethe University in Germany with the intensity and rigor only becoming of an intellectual whose historical interests embraced German history, politics and culture, but also to engage in the kind of research and dissemination that such linguistic skills and background make possible. For these reasons related to his strong, robust academic background and his accomplishments during his career, Dr. Lowinsky was also able to deliver a full panoply of public lectures and talks both at, and outside of, York University, including those given at academic conferences. The recipient of Certificates of Appreciation for Parent and Community Involvement and Contributions made to Schools, a Merit Award and an Honorary Disability Sensitivity Award, he also received conference travel grants and various research grants while in academia. As well, he has been recognized and honored by other publishers of biographical profiles. In retirement, Dr. Lowinsky not only enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, listening to classical music, jazz, and popular music from the 1950s and 1960s, and playing and practicing the piano, but he also loves photography, traveling, hiking, reading, writing and engaging in political, cultural and philosophical discussions.
