In 2016, Dr. Gutteridge retired from his position as senior vice provost and interim dean at the College of Human Services, where he had worked since 2012. Since his retirement, he has been professor emeritus at the University of Toledo. Prior to this, he served as dean and professor at the University of Toledo from 2003 to 2016, the University of Connecticut from 1992 to 2003, and Southern Illinois University from 1983 to 1992. He was an assistant and associate professor at the University at Buffalo from 1970 to 1983 and a teaching assistant at Purdue University from 1967 to 1970.
From 1964 to 1965, Dr. Gutteridge was a safety engineer with Buick Motors in Flint, Michigan. He was then a corporate recruiter for Industrial Nucleonics in Columbus, Ohio from 1966 to 1967. From 1972 to 2012, he spent time as a labor arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. More recently, he was a member of the Connecticut State Board of Labor Relations from 1995 to 1998.
Dr. Gutteridge began his education in 1965 when he earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering at the General Motors Institute, now known as Kettering University, in Flint, Michigan. He went on to obtain his Master of Science in industrial administration at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana in 1996.In 1971, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in industrial administration from Purdue University. The highlight of his career was becoming the first and only member of his family to garner a Doctorate. While at Purdue University, Dr. Gutteridge was inspired to enter academia by his own professor, Joseph Ullman.
In addition to contributing numerous articles to professional journals, Dr. Gutteridge is also the co-author of "Organizational Career Development: Benchmarks for Building a World-Class Workforce." and "Organizational Career Development: State of Practice." In 1983, he was presented with Career Development Awards from the American Society for Training and Development. Dr. Gutteridge has previously been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
