Dr. Daniel Whitman Celebrates an Impressive Legacy as a Foreign Service Professional

    WASHINGTON, DC, September 11, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Daniel Whitman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Since 2009, Dr. Whitman has worked as an assistant professor in cross-cultural communications at American University in Washington. He was also an assistant professor of foreign policy at the university from 2008 to 2012. Prior to this tenure, he held many different positions with a number of government departments over the course of four decades. He began his career as a French teacher at the Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA from 1968 to 1972 and a French-English interpreter for the U.S. Department of State in Washington from 1969 to 1984. From there, he worked as program director of Delphi Research Associates from 1981 to 1983 and then as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State from 1985 to 2009.

Working with the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Whitman traveled around the world under multiple titles with U.S. Embassies. His first position there was as a press officer in Copenhagen, Denmark from 1986 to 1989, and then in Madrid from 1989 to 1993. He then became a program development officer in Pretoria, South Africa from 1995 to 1999. He went on to become a public affairs officer in a number of countries worldwide, mainly in Africa, including Haiti, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, the Republic of South Sudan, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Guinea. He held a brief position as an oral historian with the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training in Arlington, VA from 2006 to 2007 before becoming the deputy director of the Office of Public Diplomacy within the African Bureau of the U.S. Department of State from 2007 to 2009. He was also a senior advisor at the U.S. President's African Leaders Summit in 2014.

Dr. Whitman earned a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1968. He went on to obtain a Master of Arts from Boston University in 1974, and then a Doctor of Philosophy from Brown University in Providence, RI in 1979. Since completing his education, he has spent time involved in a number of civic responsibilities. He was a founding board member of the Asian Scholarship Fund in Washington from 2008 to 2015, and was a member of DACOR from 2012 to 2016. From 2014 to 2016, he was the president of the Virtual Educa Foundation and a member of the Public Diplomacy Council. In 2016, he went on to become a board member of the Public Diplomacy Alumni Association and a faculty sponsor of No Lost Generation at American University, an initiative in support of children and youth affected by the Syria and Iraq crises.
