With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Bouchillon has been recognized as professor emeritus of Union University, Jackson, TN, since 1991, having held the position of a professor of psychology since 1969. In addition to his primary role, he was dean of the school of natural and behavioral sciences ans chair of the department of psychology and the division of social sciences from 1969 to 1989. Prior to obtaining these positions, he was the acting dean of students at Carson Newman College from 1967 to 1968 and an instructor of psychology with Southwest Baptist College from 1966 to 1967. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bouchillon was a pastor with various Southern Baptist Churches throughout Mississippi, Texas, California, and Nevada. He also taught graduate level courses for the University of Tennessee at Martin in their off campus program.
Dr. Bouchillon was inspired to pursue a career in the field by his humble background. He paid his way through school working in a plant making ladies' underwear, which is where he also met his wife of 72 years. He began his career as a student at Samford University, completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. Dr. Bouchillon later studied at the University of Tennessee, earning a Doctor of Education in 1970. He also attended New Orleans Baptist Seminary 1950-1952. In the the late 1970s, he did post graduate study at the Alfred Adler Institute, Chicago.
A respected voice in his community, Dr. Bouchillon has been affiliated with numerous organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the North American Society of Adlerian Psychologists, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa. A former member of the executive board of directors of the California Southern Baptist Convention, he has served as an interim pastor at 26 Baptist churches nationwide, and he has been a workshop conference leader with various community and church groups. Dr. Bouchillon has served as a consultant with the Western State Hospital Adolescent Unity, a speaker at multiple high school commencements, community events, and he has served as a consultant with the Jackson Boys Club. He and his wife, Dr. Pat Bouchillon co-authored numerous articles for educational and religious publications.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bouchillon has been recognized for his contributions, including with an Educational Appreciation Award from the Jackson Boys Club. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. In his free time, Dr. Bouchillon enjoys writing, real estate, and traveling.
