Dr. Street has been a faculty member in the School of Engineering at Stanford University since 1962. He was the William Alden and Martha Campbell professor of engineering from 1997 to 2004, and vice provost and dean of libraries and information resources from 1992 to 1994, having been vice president from 1987 to 1992. In 2005, he was recognized as the Campbell professor emeritus of fluid mechanics and applied mathematics. With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Street has been recalled to active duty regularly between 2005 and 2018.
From 1983 to 1987, Dr. Street was vice provost for academic computing and information systems and, then, vice provost and dean of research and academic information systems, having been associate dean of the research in the school of engineering from 1971 to 1983. He was the founding director of the Bob and Norma Street Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory from 1985 to 1991, and chair of the department of Civil Engineering from 1972 to 1980 and 1994 to 1995.
Dr. Street began his career as a student at Stanford University in 1952, obtaining a Master of Science in civil engineering in 1957, under the tutelage of his mentor, Prof. John K. Vennard. After three years in the US Navy CEC, Street continued his studies under Prof. Byrne Perry, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in fluid mechanics and applied mathematics in 1962. Following Vennard's death in 1969, Dr. Street became co-author of Vennard's "Elementary Fluid Mechanics." Street is also the author of "The Analysis and Solution of Partial Differential Equations."
Throughout his career, Dr. Street has been recognized for his contributions, e.g., as a senior postdoctoral fellow and faculty fellow of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science, and a senior Queen's Fellow in Marine Science in Australia. Dr. Street was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, to the National Academy of Engineering (in 2004), and as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (in 2009). He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
