Mr. Russell is a retired insurance company executive who devoted 34 years to the industry as the president of Baldwin Mutual Insurance Company in Foley, Ala. Since his retirement, he has been involved in local government. Getting involved in public office as a way to give back, he served as mayor of the city of Foley from 1996 to 2006 and commissioner of revenue for the Governor's cabinet for the state of Alabama from 2008 to 2010. Mr. Russell is now serving as a probate judge for Baldwin County, Ala. since 2010.
While involved in the insurance business, Mr. Russell served as a longtime board of directors member for Baldwin Mutual Insurance Company since 1976. Founded in 1921 to provide insurance for Baldwin County residents who were unable to secure coverage, the company later moved its headquarters to Foley in 1943, where it remains to this day. Throughout its history, BMIC has provided coverage to over 100,000 Alabama property-owners and currently offers dwelling fire, manufactured home, farm, commercial, personal liability and premises liability throughout the state. Mr. Russell served as a member of the board of directors for Riviera Utilities in Foley, Gulf Coast Title Insurance Company in Foley and Colonial Bank.
Extremely active in his community, Mr. Russell was known for his devotion to several great organizations. He served as the president of the South Baldwin United Way, chairman of the Foley Public Library and Saint Margaret's Church Board, treasurer of the South Baldwin Hospital and trustee for the U.S. Naval Air Museum, among other roles. Mr. Russell served with several professional organizations as well, including as the chairman of the board of directors for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, on the board of directors for the Alabama Insurance Planning Committee and the Insurance Education Foundation and as president of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter Society.
While serving as the chairman of his International Trade Association, Mr. Russell had the opportunity to travel throughout the U.S. and four other countries with his wife, speaking at state associations on behalf of the insurance industry. It was one of the most exciting years of his professional life. A Paul Harris fellow in 1986, Mr. Russell has also been cited in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Mr. Russell holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Alabama since 1970 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Alabama since 1975. He is a chartered property casualty underwriter. Notably, he served as a captain in the United States Army and a Vietnam veteran. For his time served in the military, Mr. Russell has become a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Military Officers Association, the Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans Association.
