An emeritus professor of history, Dr. Jones began his professional career at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant professor in 1968. Later moving into the roles of associate professor, and then full professor in 1979, he also served as secretary of the faculty senate between 1983 and 1985 and chaired the history department between 1990 and 1993. An expert in Russian history, Dr. Jones was invited to teach as a visiting professor at the University of Queensland in 1994.
Dr. Jones is a former president of the New England History Teachers Association and the New England Slavic Association. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies and the Southern Slavic Association. As a senior in college, he was still unsure as to what he wanted to do after graduation. Five years later, he had completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Russian History and quickly found a position in academia at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Jones holds an undergraduate degree from Lafayette College since 1963 and a doctorate from Cornell University since 1968.
Dr. Jones has published twenty articles in his area of expertise in various peer-reviewed journals and three books: "Emancipation of the Russian Nobility" in 1973, "Provincial Development in Russia" in 1984 and "Bread Upon Waters" in 2013. Dr. Jones has been included in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the East and the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
