Dr. Hoffman began his career as an engraver for Scores International (formerly Commonwealth Digital) in Boston, Massachusetts from 1990 to 1998, was Chief Editor with ECS Publishing from 1998–2017 and has been Senior Editor at ECS Publishing Group since 2018. Throughout his career, he has had numerous pieces that he has edited, composed, and arranged, and which he has published in various forms. Some of his recorded compositions include 'Arirang Variations' on the CD "Continental Drift" performed by Peter Sheridan and Judy Diez d'Aux (Move Records, 2016), 'Vocalise' on the CD "Sheer Grace," performed by the National Lutheran Choir (2013), and 'Meditations and Memories' on the CD "Monologues and Dialogues," performed by Peter Sheridan, (Move Records, 2011). Dr. Hoffman has been editor for thousands of compositions written by internationally renowned composers in genres ranging from operas to solo works. Some of these editions include the 75th anniversary edition of Randall Thompson's "Alleluia," "Freedom Song by Robert Kyr, "The Digital Wonder Watch" by David Evan Thomas, "Gabriel's Daughter" by Henry Mollicone, and "Shakespeare Madrigals" by Gregg Smith. The latter four titles all won Paul Revere Awards for Graphic Excellence from the Music Publishers Association of the United States.
While at Scores International, he served as engraving editor for a number of major publishers including Universal Edition, Warner Brothers Entertainment, and has worked as the engraving editor for selections from such movies as "Home Alone" and "Batman Returns." Dr. Hoffman contributed as engraving editor for the music samples in the book "The Compleat Conductor" by Gunther Schuller (Oxford University Press, 1997).
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Hoffman received a Bachelor of Music degree cum laud in Composition from Boston Conservatory of Music in 1981. Following this achievement, he earned a Master of Music degree in Composition from The New England Conservatory of Music (Boston) in 1984. Dr. Hoffman concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music from Brandeis University (Waltham, Massachusetts) in 1993.
In addition to his career, Dr. Hoffman was conductor for the Temple Israel High Holiday Choir in Swampscott, Massachusetts from 1988 to 1996. He was a guest lecturer at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in Lenox, Massachusetts in 1996, the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2001, and Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts in 2018. He served as guest conductor of the Zachor Choral Ensemble at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts from 1996 to 1997 for the community-wide Holocaust memorial services. From 1997 to 2003, and from 2005 to 2007, he was conductor for of the Congregation B'nai Torah High Holiday Choir in Sudbury, Massachusetts. He was also Founding Music Director of the Temple Israel of Natick Singers in Natick, Massachusetts from 2012 to 2015. Dr. Hoffman considers the highlight of his career to be the premiere performance of his composition "There is a Name," which was selected to be the anthem for the dedication ceremony of the New England Holocaust Memorial for an audience of over 8000 people.
Dr. Hoffman is a member of Broadcast Music, Inc., and received the Broadcast Music Student Composers Award 1984–85 for his piece, "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." He was named to the 'Honored 10' by Creator Magazine for his setting of "Psalm 67" in 2009, and to the 'Select 20' by Creator Magazine in 2003 for his setting of "May the Words of My Mouth." In 2002, his composition, "Grant Us Peace," was chosen as one of the works for the Waging Peace Through Singing repertoire.
Dr. Hoffman's setting of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, "Nature," won a co-first-place prize in the 2008–2009 Choral Composition Competition sponsored by the Longfellow Chorus of Portland, Maine. In 2008, his setting of "Anim Zemiros" won a third-place prize in the Choral Composition Competition sponsored by the New York Virtuoso Singers (New York City). Dr. Hoffman has previously been selected for inclusion in the 3rd edition of Who's Who in Entertainment, and multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the East.
