George K. Mellott was recognized as Distinguished Alumni Performer by the Music Department of Eastern Illinois University in 1978.

With 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Mellott has been recognized as professor emeritus by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville since 1994. Prior to this appointment, he worked from the position of assistant professor to full professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville between 1964 and 1994 teaching clarinet, saxophone and orchestration. Previously, he served the University of the Cumberlands as an assistant professor of music from 1963 to 1964. Dr. Mellott began his career as a band director for the Ramsey Community School from 1954 to 1955.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Mellott pursued a musical education at Eastern Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Science in education in 1953. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science in education in 1954, also at Eastern Illinois University. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Iowa in 1962. Dr. Mellott concluded his studies at the University of Iowa in 1964, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree. He was recognized in 1978 as "Distinguished Alumni Performer" by the Music Department of Eastern Illinois University. While at EIU he was a charter member of Gamma Omega chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
He was the principal clarinetist with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra for 33 years. He has been active as a classical and jazz clarinetist and saxophonist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as a frequent substitute player, solo clarinetist with the ballet Orchestra of St. Louis, Bach Society Orchestra, Masterworks Chorale Orchestra, and a frequent player with the Fox Theater Orchestra and the Muny Opera Orchestra, among other venues. He was honored to play solo clarinet in the orchestra for a performance in St. Louis for famed Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
He was a soloist at the 1989 and 1991 ClarinetFests of the International Clarinet Association, and at the University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium in 1991 and 2002. After retiring and living in Colorado he was a frequent player with the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra. He formed a trio with two other St. Louisians: Dean Boal, piano, and Ellen Boal, cello, to give concerts in Colorado.
In addition to his performance and teaching career he became a pilot in the U.S. Air Force 1955-1960 serving as a flight instructor, and after leaving active duty was a pilot of fighter aircraft in the Air National Guard in Iowa, Tennessee, and Illinois, flying the F-4C Phantom jet fighter during his final six years before retiring with the rank of Lt. Col.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Mellott remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Dr. Mellott was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education.
