With more than 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Slocum was the Gerhold professor of humanities at Capital University from 1988 to 2010, and also performed as a violist with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus (1992 to 2010). In addition to her work in higher education, she is a renowned author, having written "Liturgies in Honour of Thomas Becket," "Medieval Civilization," "Sources in Medieval Culture and History," and "The Cult of Thomas Becket: History and Historiography through Eight Centuries," in addition to many articles in scholarly publications.

Dr. Slocum began her career at The Juilliard School, where she studied with Robert Mann. She then attended Youngstown State University, where she completed a Master of Arts in medieval history. In 1987, Dr. Slocum earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree (also in medieval history) from Kent State University. She is a member of the American Musicological Society, the Medieval Academy of America and the American Viola Society.

Crediting much of her success to her mentors, including her former teachers Dr. Leslie Domonkos and Dr. Coburn Graves, Dr. Slocum has been recognized throughout her career for her contributions. Among other honors, she received Capital University's Praestantia Award for excellence in teaching. She has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
