Since 2002, she has been a consultant with Ascellon Corporation in Landover, MD, has been a a patient advocate in St. Helena, CA, since 2009 and is a consultant for the World Health Organization. From 1988 to its closure in 2009, Ms. O'Leary served as both the Director of Psychiatric Nursing and was the Administrative Director of the Department of Psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago.
Prior to these positions, Ms. O'Leary held a vast number of roles in both California and Chicago. Ms. O'Leary has worked in California as a Patient Advocate at Good Medicine Consult and Advocacy in San Francisco from 2011 to 2013 andheld the Chief Nursing Officer position at Saint Helena Hospital from 2006 to 2009. From 2002 to 2006, Ms. O'Leary was the Patient Care Director at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford in Palo Alto.
While in Chicago, she worked as the Vice President of Clinical Services at Grant Hospital from 1999 to 2002, the Director of Nursing and Psychiatric Services at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center from 1989 to 1999, the Director of Nursing Education, Evaluation and Research at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center from 1980 to 1988, and the Clinical Nursing Consultant within the Department of Nursing at University of Illinois Hospital from 1975 to 1980. Furthermore, she excelled as a teacher nurse for the Chicago Board of Education's Child Parent Center Program from 1972 to 1975 and an instructor for the Chicago Board of Education's Cooperative Health Occupations Assistants Program from 1970 to 1972. Previously, Ms. O'Leary held the posts of Assistant Head Nurse at Veteran's Research Hospital from 1968 to 1970, the Coordinator of In-Patient Child Psychiatry at Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital from 1964 to 1968, and a staff nurse at Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital from 1963 to 1964.
A Chicago native, Ms. O'Leary obtained her Master in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois in 1979. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University in 1963 and did her postgraduate coursework with the National College of Education from 1974 to 1975. Ms. O'Leary's inspiration to pursue nursing was her great-aunt Mary Margaret, who was a public health nurse in a Chicago suburb.
Ms. O'Leary has held memberships in organizations such as the Midwest Nursing Research Society, the Illinois Society of Nursing Service Administrators, the Chicago Nursing In-Service Organization, the Chicago Metropolitan Area Nursing Administrators, and the American Society of Nursing Service Administrators. She is also associated with the American College of Health Care Executives, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and Sigma Theta Tau. Furthermore, she is a on the board for Honoring Choices Napa Valley and the Columbia Behavioral Health Provider Organization. Likewise, Ms. O'Leary sat on the Program Committee for the Midwest Alliance of Nursing from 1987 to 1989, was the chairman of the Program Committee for the Illinois League of Nursing from 1986 to 1988 and served as the chairperson of the Continuing Education Committee for the National Intravenous Therapy Association from 1979 to 1982.
In recognition of her dedication to the nursing field, Ms. O'Leary was named the 1996 Janseen Clinical Scholar at the Ninth Annual U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in San Diego. She was selected for inclusion in multiple publications including the 20th edition ofWho's Who in the Midwest and the First Edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. She has lent her expertise in the field to others as well, contributing to articles and journals as well as lecturing. She does not limit her compassion, spending her time as a volunteer with Honoring Choices Napa Valley, helping other health care professionals and lay people complete their advanced care directives and volunteers at the Cameo Movie Theater where various student programs take place. In Chicago, Ms. O'Leary volunteered at the Lyric Opera from 1983 to 1985 and at the radio station WITW from 1980 to 1985.
Among her expansive roles, Ms. O'Leary considers her time as a school nurse with the Chicago Board of Education the highlight of her career. She worked with underprivileged children and their mothers, teaching the mothers valuable life skills such as cooking, sewing and first aid among other parenting skills. She cared for the children and while she felt initially uncertain if she could handle the emotional demands of such difficult work, she knew that she was needed. Ms. O'Leary immersed herself into caring for others and even sent some young students to visit the since-closed School of Dentistry at Northwestern University in Chicago, so the students could learn proper dental hygiene.
Ms. O'Leary attributes her immense success to her mentors, including Sandra Nye, an attorney in Chicago who greatly inspired Ms. O'Leary, and Ms. O'Leary's childhood next-door-neighbor Dorothy Marvin, who served as a sailor in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was one of the first female executives at Marshall Fields in Chicago. Ms. O'Leary's family includes her parents John Jeremiah O'Leary and Ruth O'Leary. Her siblings include Judy, Susie, Ruthie, Betty, Therese, Peggy, John and the late Chuck O'Leary.
