He is also an attending physician at the Jewish Hospital and St. Mary's Healthcare, Norton Healthcare, Norton Children's Hospital and University Hospital. Specializing in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, specifically pediatric heart surgery, neonatal reconstruction, adult heart surgery, congenital heart repairs, triple-gauge neuromonitoring and resident education, Dr. Austin has more than 30 years of experience in medicine and academia.
Prior to his work in Louisville, Dr. Austin was employed at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. as a professor of surgery during 1989, chief of cardiac surgery and vice chairman from 1988 to 1989 and the director of pediatric cardiac surgery and an associate professor from 1985 to 1989. Over the years, he has contributed chapters to several books as well as over 140 articles in professional journals.
Dr. Austin served as the president of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society from 2010 to 2012. He is a longtime member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society of Heart Transplantation and the Society of Thoracic Surgery, among others.
A grantee recipient by both the Kosair Children's Hospital and the WHAS Crusade of Children during the 1990s, Dr. Austin has been named to Best Doctors in America and has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Earning his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth University and MD at the prestigious Harvard University, he then completed his internship and residency at Duke University between 1974 and 1985, followed by a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Children's Hospital in Boston. Certified in congenital heart disease, Dr. Austin is a diplomate of the American Board of General Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
