A respected and esteemed physician and medical researcher, Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho is currently the founder and director of the inflammatory bowel disease clinic at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition in Mexico. He founded the clinic, which was the first of its kind in Mexico, in 2006. In addition to his clinical role, he holds prominent posts for two pharmaceutical companies. He was the national research coordinator for Bristol-Myers Squibb and president of the advisory board of Schering Plough. Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho has also been a professor of medicine at the National Autonomous University in Mexico and the University Panamericana since 2006 and 2007 to date, respectively.
Prior to embarking on his medical career, Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho studied at the National Autonomous University in Mexico. He earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1996, followed by a Master of Science in 2002 and Doctor of Philosophy in 2004. Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho then completed his post-doctorate research fellowship at Harvard University. He is a certified diplomate in internal medicine, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho is a pioneer in his field, designing the first post-graduate course in inflammatory bowel disease in Mexico and Latin America. He also founded the Research and Academic Group of Crohn´s and Ulcerative colitis in Mexico (GAICCUM) that is an Association of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2013 and is also founder of the Pan American Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (PANCCO) in 2014. He has done extensive research on genetic markers in inflammatory bowel disease and innate immunity in epithelial cells. His professional achievements have earned him numerous honors, including the Glaxo Wellcome Award in 1999, given for substantial advancement in scientific knowledge within pharmaceutical sciences and the Falk Prize in several years from 2007 to 2016 for outstanding research in the field of gastroenterology.
Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho is a member of the National Academy of Medicine in Mexico, the Mexican Association of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society, among others. A FUNSALUD fellow, he was further presented with the Jon Isenberg Prize in 2005, the Bernardo Sepulveda and Abraham Ayala González Award several times, the Sanshiro Matsumoto Prize in 1998, and the Gabino Barreda Medal in 1991. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Yamamoto-Furusho was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World and the 11th edition Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He received acknowledgment from Global Medical Discovery in 2012 and the Miguel Aleman Prize, a national prize in the health field for young researchers for their contributions in the field of inflammatory bowel disease and their excellent career in the field of medicine in 2012.
