Prof. Gostin holds honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Sydney (Australia), University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), and Cardiff University (Wales), as well as the State University of New York. He is an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (United Kingdom). He previously was the Legal Director of MIND (National Association of Mental Health) in the United Kingdom, where he wrote the British Mental Health Act and brought landmark cases before the European Court of Human Rights. He led the National Council of Civil Liberties (now Liberty), founded by George Orwell.
Throughout his career, he has lent his breadth of knowledge to such creative works as the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry and the Journal of the American Medical Association, where is now global health editor. He has written dozens of books, including Human Rights and Public Health in the AIDS Pandemic (University of North Carolina Press), Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint (University of California Press), and Global Health Law (Harvard University Press).
The National Academies of Medicine and Science elected Prof. Gostin as a Lifetime Member. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Hastings Center.
