Dr. Derr has been a professor emeritus of religion and biblical literature at Smith College in Northampton, MA, since 2005. Hired by the college in 1963 as an assistant chaplain, he transitioned into teaching in 1965 as an assistant professor of religion, then associate professor and full professor. He formerly worked as an assistant chaplain at Stanford University in California and was a researcher for the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. During Dr. Derr's tenure at Smith College, he taught courses in applied ethics, including ethics in medicine, business, statecraft and international relations, the environment, sexual matters, race relations, war and church-state issues. He also served as an adjunct member and chair of the Afro-American studies department and chaired the founding committee of the department. He notably chaired both departments twice and directed the Smith Junior Year Program in Geneva.

An ordained minister through the United Church of Christ since 1956, Dr. Derr developed an interest in Reinhold Niebuhr, who taught at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He also developed an interest in World Council of Churches and lived in Geneva for several years thereafter. During the 1960s, he became involved locally in the civil rights movement and spent the summer of 1964 in the south working for the Southern Christina Leadership Conference, a non-profit African-American civil rights organization closely associated with its first president, Martin Luther King Jr. He has been involved with the World Council of Churches ever since.

Dr. Derr was a consultant to the Institute on Religion in Public Life in New York City, was a member of the compartmental faculty at Rush Medical College and served as an ethics consultant for Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. He is also a longtime member of the Society of Christian Ethics. The author of 10 books and approximately 60 articles in various professional journals, Dr. Derr most recently authored "Environmental Ethics and Christian Humanism" in 1996, "Creation at Risk? Religion, Science and Environmentalism" in 1995, and "Believable Futures of American Protestantism" in 1988.

The recipient of an Honored Professor Award by Smith College in 2002, Dr. Derr was also a Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Religion at the University of Chicago fellow in 1981 and a Danforth Foundation grantee from 1959 to 1960 and from 1965 to 1966. He has been showcased in close to 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Derr holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University, a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University.
