Dr. Staples has worked as the founder and CMC consultant at Cusp Pharmatech Consulting LLC in Cambridge, MA since 2007. He began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School at Harvard University from 1979 and 1980, which he continued part-time from 1982 to 1986. Dr. Staples then became the senior chemist and supervisor at New England Nuclear in Boston from 1980 to 1984, and then the manager of analytical biochemistry at Seragen in Lexington, MA from 1985 to 1987.
Following these posts, Dr. Staples was a research scientist at Immunogen for one year before becoming the group leader of formulation and analytical development at Biogen from 1988 to 1997. He went on to become the senior director of pharmaceutical sciences at Praecis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 1997 to 2002. Furthermore, Dr. Staples served as vice president of development and manufacturing for GlycoGensys, Inc. in Boston and vice president of research and development at MicroCHIPS, Inc. in Bedford, MA.
Dr. Staples earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and biochemistry with honors from the University of Kansas in 1975, where he later earned an additional major in English and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry in 1979. He went on to obtain a Master of Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston in 1985. Years after his graduation, Dr. Staples became the president of the New England chapter of the Parenteral Drug Association from 2003 to 2004 and the chair of the BIOTEC section of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in 2006.
Dr. Staples also served in a number of board positions, including President from 2005-2008, with the Boston Camera Club. In addition, he has several patents in his field and has contributed many articles to professional journals. Dr. Staples has been a member of numerous associations throughout his career that include the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American Chemical Society, the Parenteral Drug Association, the Photographic Society of America, and the Boston Camera Club.
In 2007, Dr. Staples was awarded the Black and White Class B Print of the Year for his region by the New England Camera Club. He has also accepted a Chapter Volunteer Award by the Parenteral Drug Association in 2006. Dr. Staples has been listed in four editions of Who's Who in America, two editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and seven editions of Who's Who in the East.
