KANAGAWA, JAPAN, September 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Masaru Taniguchi has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

While serving as a medical doctor, Dr. Taniguchi had a patient who was diagnosed with Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia; it was only the third reported case in Japan, which is what inspired him to pursue the study of basic immunology. Over the years, he has lent his expertise to the Chiba University School of Medicine as dean and professor of immunology. Additionally, he has worked for the RIKEN in their Research Center for Allergy and Immunology, their Center for Integrative Medical Sciences and their Cluster for Science, Technology and Innovation Hub, where he served as senior visiting scientist in 2018.

Throughout his many years in the field, Dr. Taniguchi has achieved much success. In 1986, he discovered a unique characteristic antigen receptor selectively expressed by a new type of lymphocyte, now known as an NKT cell. Their characteristic function bridges the innate and acquired immune systems and mediates adjuvant activity for effector lymphocytes to established a long-term memory response. Years later, he successfully identified an NKT cell-glycolipid ligand (-galactosylceramide) and developed NKT cell-deficient mice, which are essential to study NKT cell, and in 2009, he conducted a phase I/II clinical trial of NKT cell-targeted therapy on advanced lung cancer patients.

For his outstanding work, Dr. Taniguchi has been noted many times, earning the Order of the Sacred Treasure and a Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan, the Uehara Prize, and the Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Medical Prize. The American Association of Immunologists selected the discovery of NKT cells for the Pillars of Immunology Award in 2014. During the course of his career, he has published more than 400 papers in his field.

An expert in his field, Dr. Taniguchi holds a Doctor of Medicine from the Chiba University School of Medicine. He would later obtain a Doctor of Philosophy from the Graduate School of Medicine at Chiba University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he affiliates himself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Union Against Cancer, the Japanese Cancer Association and the Japanese Society of Immunology, where he served as president from 1997 until 1998. In the near future, Dr. Taniguchi intends to experience the continued growth and success of his career.
