She began her career as an elementary school teacher within Indianapolis Public Schools from 1972 to 1974, and then within Center Grove Community School Corporation from 1974 to 1981. She then became the director of administration of Brougher Agency, Inc., in Greenwood, IN, from 1981 to 1984 and the manager of claims and customer service of the Associated Group, Inc., from 1984 to 1989. Following these positions, she served as vice president of team operations for Key Benefit Administrators, Inc., from 1989 to 1992 and regional manager of operations review and projects for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1992 to 1997.
Ms. Calvano earned a Bachelor of Education, with distinction, from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, in 1971. She went on to obtain a Master of Education, with highest distinction, from Indiana University and Purdue University in Indianapolis, IN, in 1975. She is also a certified paralegal, is certified in Total Quality Management, and is a licensed life, accident, health, property and casualty insurance agent in Indiana. In addition, she holds a Project Management Professional Designation and has fulfilled many civic duties throughout her career, notably with the United States of America Pickleball Association since 2012 and the Community Life Center Wellness Ministry since 2011.
Alongside her professional roles, Ms. Calvano has been a member of various organizations within her field, including the American Management Association, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, the National Association of Health Underwriters, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Indianapolis Paralegal Association, the Project Management Institute and Toastmasters International. She was awarded a Good Girl Citizenship Award by the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion in 1968, and she is listed in several editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
