An accomplished listee, Ms. Greenhouse celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Ms. Greenhouse began her career in New York City in 1968 as an assistant to the New York Times columnist James Reston. After a year in that position, she spent the following 39 years in reporting positions at The Times: metropolitan reporter, 1969-1974; state political reporter, 1974-1977; and Supreme Court correspondent in the newspaper's Washington, D.C. bureau from 1978 to 2008. Upon retiring from The Times in 2008, she took a full-time teaching position at Yale Law School as the Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law and Knight Distinguished Journalist in Residence. In 2010, she also began writing a twice-monthly op ed column on the Supreme Court as a contributing columnist for the New York Times web site.

She is the author of five books: "Becoming Justice Blackmun: Harry Blackmun's Supreme Court Journey," 2005; "Before Roe v. Wade: Voices That Shaped the Abortion Debate Before the Supreme Court's Ruling" (with Reva B. Siegel), 2010; "The U.S. Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction," 2012; "The Burger Court and the Rise of the Judicial Right" (with Michael J. Graetz), 2016; and "Just a Journalist: On the Press, Life, and the Spaces Between," 2017.

She has been a member of the governing boards of several non-profit institutions. Elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2001, she served as a member of the Council from 2009 to 2013, vice president from 2013 to 2017, and became the organization's first female president in 2017. She was elected in 1994 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and since 2004 has served as a member of its Council. She was a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers from 2009 to 2015. An inducted member of Phi Beta Kappa, she has served on the organization's Senate since 2009 and was a visiting scholar from 2004 to 2006. From 2009 to 2016, she served on the board of directors of the American Constitution Society.

Ms. Greenhouse is a graduate of Radcliffe College, Harvard, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. In 1978, she earned a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law School, which she attended on a Ford Foundation fellowship. She has received 13 honorary degrees.

Among her awards are a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism (for beat reporting) in 1998; the Carey McWilliams Award from the American Political Science Association; the Henry J. Friendly Medal from the American Law Institute, which elected her as one of two non-lawyer honorary members; the Golden Pen Award from the Legal Writing Institute; the Goldsmith Career Award from the Harvard Kennedy School; the John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism; the President's Special Award from the New York Women's Bar Association; and the Anvil of Freedom Award from the Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media at the University of Denver.
She is a member of the International Women's Forum and the Yale Club of New York City. Formerly, she belonged to the Harvard Club of Washington D.C., where she served on the board of directors from 1898 to 1992.
