He began his professional career after receiving a postdoctoral fellowship sponsored by the National Institutes of Health at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1981 to 1983. Following this, he became an assistant professor at his current institution and was promoted to associate professor five years later. During this time, he was also a consultant for Koch Industries in Wichita, KS, for three years and a visiting professor at Kerr-McGee in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1989.
The teachers surrounding Dr. Bunce when he was growing up got him interested in chemistry, especially his chemistry teacher. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Marietta College in Marietta, OH, in 1975, and then obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981. After graduating, he went on to provide editorial support to a number of professional journals related to his field, including the American Chemical Society Journals, Heterocyclic Communications, and Organic Preparations and Procedures International, among others. He has also been a member of such organizations as the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry.
The highlights of Dr. Bunce's career were the awards he has received, including the Oklahoma Medal for Teaching in 2013, a very prestigious award, and the Oklahoma Chemist Award for Research in 2009. Other accolades he has received include the Regents Distinguished Research Award, the Lectureship Award from Sigma Xi, and two Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Awards. He is listed in the fourth edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
