Dr. Klinger began his career as a research assistant and then research associate with the Association of American Medical Colleges from 1957 to 1960. He was also active as a clinical psychology trainee at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, IL, and the West Side VA Hospital, now the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, from 1957 to 1960. From 1960 to 1962, he worked as an instructor in the department of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After this opportunity, Dr. Klinger progressed from assistant to associate to full professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota, Morris, from 1962 to 2006 and also served as an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, from 1978 to 2006.
Dr. Klinger also held the position of coordinator of the psychology discipline at the University of Minnesota, Morris, from 1962 to 2006. During this time, he contributed to the Ruhr University Bochum in Germany as a visiting professor of psychology from 1983 to 1984 and the University of Konstanz in Germany as a visiting professor in 1995. He has maintained involvement with the University of Minnesota, Morris, as professor emeritus of psychology since 2006. Dr. Klinger served as specialized research faculty at Sofia University in Palo Alto, CA, from 2008 to 2010.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Klinger received a Bachelor of Arts in social relations, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, in 1954. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from the University of Chicago in Illinois in 1960. Dr. Klinger is a licensed psychologist in the state of Minnesota and also held certification as a licensed consulting psychologist from 1974 to 1992.
Dr. Klinger is a frequent contributor of articles and reviews to journals and conference proceedings. He is the author of the books "Structure and Functions of Fantasy" in 1971, "Meaning and Void: Inner Experience and the Incentives in People's Lives" in 1977, and "Daydreaming" in 1990. He edited the book "Imagery: Concepts, Results and Applications" in 1981, and co-edited the first and second editions of the book "Handbook of Motivational Counseling," published by John Wiley & Sons in 2004 and 2011. Dr. Klinger has also contributed a number of chapters to books.

Among other services, Dr. Klinger contributed to Stevens Community Memorial Hospital, now the Stevens Community Medical Center, in Morris, MN, as a consultant from 1987 to 1989. From 1977 to 1982, he was a member of the American Psychological Association's Division 8 Committee on the Advancement of Personality Psychology, and from 1985 to 1997, he served as a member of the scientific advisory council for the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich, Germany. He was appointed to the role of chair of the Morris Intercity Transit Committee from 1993 to 1994 and Stevens County representative for the West Central Minnesota five-county transportation needs assessment steering committee from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Klinger also served as a consultant for Tibor Palfai's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism project "Secondary Prevention of Alcohol Dependence and Depression Among College Students" from 2007 to 2010 and an external member of the dissertation committee at Sofia University from 2008 to 2010.
Dr. Klinger is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and the Midwestern Psychological Association. He is a member of the American Association for the Study of Mental Imagery, where he acted as president from 1980 to 1981, and has been a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams since 2013. Dr Klinger also belongs to the Association for Research in Personality, the Minnesota Psychological Association, Sigma Xi and the American Association of University Professors.
Dr. Klinger was recipient of the Horace T. Morse Amoco Award in 1972 and was named Senior Research Fulbright Scholar to Ruhr University Bochum from 1975 to 1976. He was presented with the Outstanding Teacher of Undergraduate Psychology Award by the Minnesota Psychological Association in 1990 and the Faculty Research Award by the University of Minnesota, Morris in 2000. He was elected to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Minnesota in 1998 and honored with the Henry A. Murray Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in 2005. Dr. Klinger has previously been selected for inclusion in the third edition of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, the 26th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest, the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America and multiple editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in American Education.
