Dr. Klein began his career as an assistant professor of pathology at the New York University School of Medicine in New York City and assistant attending pathologist at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue from 1972 to 1976. In 1976, he became a pathologist at the University Hospital in Newark, NJ, and from 1976 to 1982, he worked as an assistant professor of pathology at the New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. Dr. Klein progressed to associate professor of pathology at the New Jersey Medical School at UMDNJ from 1982 to 1988.
Dr. Klein continued his career with the New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ, later at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences from 1988 to 2017 as professor of pathology and laboratory medicine. During that time, he held the positions of acting chair of pathology at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and acting chief of pathology services with University Hospital Newark, New Jersey, from 1988 to 1989 and again from 1992 to 1994. He also served as chief of anatomic pathology at Bergen Regional Medical Center, now New Bridge Medical Center, in Paramus, NJ, from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Klein has held the role of professor emeritus of pathology and laboratory medicine at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences since 2017.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Klein received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1961. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1967. Dr. Klein is also a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology.
In addition to his career, Dr. Klein is the co-author of "Handbook of Pathology," published in 1987, and a regular contributor of articles to professional journals. He served as trustee of the Norwood Public Library in New Jersey from 1983 to 1997 and as president from 1986 to 1991. In 2001, he was appointed Middle Atlantic Regional Commissioner of the Laboratory Accreditation Program at the College of American Pathologists in Northfield, IL, a position he still holds. Dr. Klein is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and an emeritus member of the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society.
Dr. Klein is also a member of the Rodger C. Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society, the New Jersey Society of Pathologists and the New York Pathological Society. He was named Clinical Faculty of the Year by the New Jersey Medical School, elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 2006 and has also received the Michele Raible Award from the Association of Pathology Chairs. Dr. Klein has previously been selected for inclusion in the fifth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 57th and 58th editions of Who's Who in America.
