Gowen professor emeritus with the University of Rochester, a professorial fellow in motivation with Australian Catholic University, and a professor of management with the University of South-East Norway. Earlier in his career, he served with the University of Rochester as chair of the Department of Psychology, and professor within the department as well. Additionally, Dr. Deci has gained valuable expertise as the president and then the board chair of the Institute for Research and Reform in Education. He was also an honorary president of the Canadian Psychological Association.
A licensed psychologist in New York, Dr. Deci holds a Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College, a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Carnegie Mellon University. He was an interdisciplinary post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University. Along with Richard M. Ryan, Deci has co-authored more than one-hundred papers and three books, including "Self-Determination Theory: Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development and Wellness" and "Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Human Behavior." With other writers, Dr. Deci has also written "Why We Do What We Do" and "Industrial and Organizational Psychology."
For his excellence in the field, Dr. Deci has been recognized with Research Awards from the International Society for Self & Identity, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Positive Psychology Network. As well, he has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Education Sciences, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. For many years he has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
