Dr. Charles W. Hedrick retired from his role as distinguished professor of religious studies with Missouri State University in 2005.

Amassing nearly five decades of professional excellence, Dr. Hedrick retired from his role as distinguished professor of religious studies with Missouri State University in 2005. At the inception of his career, he worked as a pastor for Mayersville Baptist Church (Mayersville, MS) and First Baptist Church (Needles, CA), where he served from 1956 to 1958 and from 1962 to 1965, respectively. From 1965 to 1978 he also worked as a deputy probation officer with the Los Angeles County Probation Department and after he completed the Ph.D. in Religion, he served as an assistant professor of religious studies with Wagner College, while also serving as a chaplain in the United States Army Reserve. He retired from the army with the rank of colonel in 1994.
An expert in his field, Dr. Hedrick holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mississippi College, a Bachelor of Divinity from Golden Gate Southern Baptist Seminary, a Master of Arts from the University of Southern California, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion from Claremont Graduate University. His graduate education, professional background, and academic publications have issued in a blog called "Wry Thoughts about Religion." In addition, he has authored a number of books in the academic study of religion, including The Apocalypse of Adam: A Literary and Source Analysis, Parables as Poetic Fictions: The Creative Voice of Jesus, Many Things in Parables: Jesus and His Modern Critics and Unlocking the Secrets of the Gospel According to Thomas: A Radical Faith for a New Age, as well as a plethora of articles to professional journals and chapters in academic books. His last book is entitled: Unmasking Biblical Faiths. The Marginal Relevance of the Bible for Contemporary Religious Faith.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Hedrick maintained affiliation with the Society of Biblical Literature, Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas and the International Association for Coptic Studies. For his excellence in the field, he has been recognized many times, earning the John G. Gammie Distinguished Scholar Award from the Southwest Committee on Religious Studies, three University Research Awards from Southwest Missouri State University in 1998, 2000, and 2005, and features in the 68th and 69th editions of Who's Who in America and the fourth edition of Who's Who in Religion. One of the highlights of his career was being involved in the Nag Hammadi Coptic Gnostic Project for the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity in Claremont, CA, which he says was one of the most life-changing experiences of his life. In the immediate future, Dr. Hedrick intends to continue publishing short academic essays on his blog while enjoying retirement.
