An experienced flutist since the age of 9, Ms. Goodfellow worked as a faculty member of the Alan Weight Music Studio in Salt Lake City for 16 years. She was also professor of flute and directed the flute program at the University of Utah, retiring as Emeritus Professor in 2009. She began her professional music career as the first flute player of the New York City Symphony from 1963 to 1965. She relocated to the Midwest to become a flutist in the Chicago Chamber Orchestra for two years before accepting a position on the editorial staff for Encyclopedia Britannica in Chicago. Continuing her path in writing, she became the assistant editor of the Britannica Book of Music in 1975, where she remained for four years before once again moving out west. Once settled in Salt Lake City again, she became a flutist in the Symphony West for the next three years while also serving as member of the flute faculty at Brigham Young University for 11 years.
A native of Flushing, NY, Ms. Goodfellow earned a Bachelor of Science from The Juilliard School in New York City in 1965, and went on to obtain a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago two years later. After graduating, she took part in several music programs in the Utah area. She served as a program annotator for the Salt Lake Symphony for 13 years, during which time she also instructed flute at the Pre-College Conservatory Program at the University of Utah. She has also been active with the Salt Lake City Chamber Music Society for the last 38 years, and much later, she received a fellowship from the Music Teachers National Association in 2017.
Ms. Goodfellow initially began playing piano at the age of 6 and switched to flute once she heard her town's high school band play. Her uncle worked for a music company in Boston, MA, and had access to a flute, which is how she started playing and was already at a superior level by the time she reached high school. She was a reviewer and critic for American Music Teacher Magazine for 14 years, and has also served on the National Editorial Board of Flutist Quarterly since 1990. In addition, she has been active with the National Flute Association and received a Legacy Award from the Music Teachers National Association in 2004. Since retiring, she has participated in a Latter-Day Saints church service mission in family and church history, and has been listed in the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women and the first three editions of Who's Who in Entertainment.
The one aspect of her life that made her the happiest, was her marriage to her husband, William Scott Goodfellow, who she married on July 23, 1974; he passed away on January 23, 2013.
