With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Muskin has been a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University since 2000. He was an associate clinical professor (1987) and an assistant clinical professor (1980). He became the associate chief of the Columbia University Medical Center consultation-liaison psychiatry service in 1985, and was appointed chief of the service in 1999.
Dr. Muskin began his career at Cornell University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in neurobiology and behavior in 1969. He then joined the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, completing a Master of Arts in experimental psychology in 1970. In 1974, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society, prior to joining Metropolitan Hospital for a medical internship from 1974 to 1975. He completed a psychiatric residency at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in 1978, followed by a National Institute of Mental Health fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center from 1978 to 1979 and a research fellowship in therapeutics at the NYS Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Muskin graduated from the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research and is certified in psychoanalysis.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Muskin has contributed more than 50 articles to professional journals. He has authored and co-authored more than 40 book chapters, and is the author/editor of 17 books. The book Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatry, which he edited with Drs. Gerbarg and Brown (American Psychiatric Publishing 2017), was the winner of a Nautilus Gold Award. The former president of the Association for Academic Psychiatry and the Society of Liaison Psychiatry, he is a fellow of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is he current Secretary of the American Psychiatric Association (2017-2019).
Throughout his career, Dr. Muskin has been recognized for his contributions, having been named Teacher of the Year by the New York State Psychiatric Institute on three occasions. He has been in every edition of the New York Times Super Doctors supplement and in every edition of the Castle Connolly Guide: Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area, as well as in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the East.
