Since 2010, Dr. Broome has been the Frank S. Kaulback professor emeritus of commerce at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, where he was a professor of commerce from 1991 to 2010 and a professor of law from 1998 to 2017. From 1978 to 1984, he was an executive director at the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts in Charlottesville. He also spent time at the University of Virginia as a professor of accounting from 1967 to 1991, an associate dean from 1992 to 1998, an interim dean in 1997, the director of graduate studies from 1986 to 1992, and the director of the Ernst & Young master's program from 1998 to 2001.
During his time as a teacher, Dr. Broome taught approximately 8,000 students. One of these students approached him one day after class requesting to drop his course because of a bad exam grade. He encouraged her to continue on with the course and score a bit higher on each test. She agreed and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant and was very successful. She later decided to become a professor. He supported her application for a Doctor of Philosophy program, and she now teaches at another Virginia university. He considers this moment of guiding a student to believe in herself to be the highlight of his career.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Broome was a faculty fellow at Price Waterhouse & Company in New York City in 1964 and a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin in 1975, Duke University from 1977 to 1978, and Tulane University in 2002. Furthermore, he was a visiting research scholar at Lancaster University in England in 1994 and an administrator of exams for the CFA Institute from 1973 to 1977.
Dr. Broome was on the College for Financial Planning Board of Regents from 1984 to 1989, where he was a chairman from 1987 to 1989. Dr. Broome has been a member of the CPA Examination Review Board from 1984 to 1987 and from 2012 to 2015, where he was also chairman from 1986 to 1987 and vice chairman from 2013 to 2014. From 1995 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2006, he was a member of the exams committee at the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.
From 1989 to 1991, he was on the board of directors at the International Board of Standards and Practices for CFPs. Additionally, he was a member of the visiting advisory committee at the DePaul University School of Accountancy from 1991 to 1996 and the Virginia Board of Accountancy from 2003 to 2011, where he was vice chair from 2008 to 2009 and chair from 2009 to 2010.
Dr. Broome's academic pursuits began at Duke University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois, where he received a Master of Science in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. On top of these degrees, he is a certified public accountant in the state of Virginia. He always knew he would become a teacher as his parents were both public school teachers. He was told he would be a good accountant and so he decided to take accounting classes during college. After working for an accountant, he decided to go back and get degrees to become a teacher.
Since 2011, Dr. Broome has been on the governing board of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, where he was secretary from 2012 to 2015 and on the investment committee from 2012 to 2014. Furthermore, he is currently a member of the Educational Foundation for the Virginia Society of CPAs and is a founding member of the Nature Foundation at Wintergreen, where he was on the board of directors from 2012 to 2017, treasurer in 2017, and on the finance committee since 2011.
In addition to this involvement, Dr. Broome is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, where he was on the board of examiners from 1977 to 1982 and from 2006 to 2010. He also holds membership with the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute, where he was on the investment analysis standards board from 1985 to 1986, and the National Association of Accountants, where he was president of his local chapter in 1974. Moreover, he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Dr. Broome has been acknowledged for his many accomplishments over the years in the form of awards such as the Commendation Career Contribution Award and Outstanding Member of the Year from the Virginia Society of CPAs in 2006 and 2012, respectively. In 1979, he was named Outstanding Educator by the Virginia Society of CPAs, and in 1988, he was the recipient of the Z Society Outstanding Faculty Award by the University of Virginia.
