From 1966 to 1995, Mr. Hawthorne was a music specialist at South Euclid Lyndhurst City Schools in Lyndhurst, OH. Additionally, he was a choir director at the South Euclid-Hillcrest United Methodist Church from 1968 to 1986. He has permanent certification in the Department of Education for the state of Ohio. His academic pursuits began at The Ohio State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education in 1966. Mr. Hawthorne continued his studies at Case Western Reserve University, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1970.
Mr. Hawthorne recalls the highlight of his career was the moment he saw the smiles on the faces of two students. They came from Japan and spoke no English at all. However, while listening to Beethoven, there were moments where the music communicated with the students. He was drawn to the music world at an early age. In middle school, Mr. Hawthorne had an inspiring band director named Robert D. Hodgkinson Jr., who eventually became his trombone teacher until he left for college.
As he is a member of a creative field, Mr. Hawthorne is the brains and heart behind many creative works. He arranged band compositions "Four Scottish Songs," "Happy Brothers (Vesili Bratri)," "Rapid Transit Rag," "A Burns Medley and "Four Stick Joe." Additionally, he is the arranger of "Czardas," "Sabre Dance," "Waltz in Ragtime," and Channukah Clinic March of the Men of Harlach. He has been the conductor of the University Heights Symphonic Band, the Cleveland Concert Band and the Pepper Pike Community Band, and played trombone and euphonium in the Hillcrest Concert Band.
Additionally, Mr. Hawthorne has composed numerous pieces over the years, including band compositions such as "Red Shirt Waltz," "Prelude," "Waltz and Rondo," "Polka Sine Nomine" and "Bo and John Polka." Other pieces include "Brittany's Waltz," "Ernie's Polka," "DTJ Polka," "Freedom and Justice March" and "Ohio 200 March." Furthermore, he composed "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Here Comes the Band," "Song and Dance," "Pepper Pike March," "A Geauga Fantasy" and "Veni-Venite for Choir."
Mr. Hawthorne holds a lifetime membership in many organizations, including the National Education Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Kappa Kappa Psi. He is also a member of the Ohio Music Education Association, the National Association for Music Education, and is a retired lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association. Moreover, he is a Zeta Sigma chapter patron of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. Mr. Hawthorne was previously featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
