A renowned nuclear engineer and researcher, Mr. Beckjord retired in 1996 as the chairman of the committee on safety of nuclear installation at the Nuclear Energy Agency for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in Paris, France, and as the research director of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, DC. Working in the field for nearly 40 years, he also served as the deputy director at Argonne National Laboratory from 1980 to 1984, coordinator of international nuclear study and director of nuclear power development at the U.S. Department of Energy, in various other roles for the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Federal Energy Administration in Washington, Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Brussels, Belgium, and Pittsburgh, PA, and General Electric in California. Furthermore, he taught academia as a visiting professor of nuclear engineering at his alma mater, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), from 1984 to 1986.
Since retirement, Mr. Beckjord served as chairman of the Nuclear Energy Agency in Paris, of the OECD Committee on Safety Research Needs for the Russian designed VVER reactors in Europe and as the executive director of future nuclear power at MIT from 2002 to 2003. Locally, he served on the board of visitors in the department of materials and nuclear engineering at the University of Maryland and on the visiting committee in the nuclear engineering department at MIT. An elected fellow and formerly on the board of directors of the American Nuclear Society, Mr. Beckjord is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and member of Sigma Xi.
Inspired by many great mentors, Mr. Beckjord had some wonderful mathematics, physics and chemistry instructors during high school. He also had two great professors at Harvard University and MIT, one of which was a Nobel Prize winner for the basis for powerful machines that are now used for medical analysis. Early in his career, Mr. Beckjord co-authored "Boiling Water Reactor Design" in 1962. He has also since contributed many articles to professional journals in his area of expertise. The recipient of a Presidential Meritorious Award in 1992, Mr. Beckjord has been cited in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East as well.
Mr. Beckjord has held a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Harvard University since 1951, a Master of Electrical Engineering from MIT since 1956, a Master of Arts in business from the University of Chicago since 1982, and a Master of Business Administration, also from the University of Chicago, since 1984. Between 1951 and 1954, Mr. Beckjord served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Married to the late Caroline Wendell Gardner, Mr. Beckjord is the father of four children. In his free time, he loves studying history.
