Prior to obtaining this role, she was a coordinator of outpatient and consultant services and manager of quality assurance of the Day Mont West Community Mental Health Center from 1975 to 1982. Earlier in her career, Ms. Turner was the director of social work at the Children's Medical Center from 1966 to 1975, where she was previously a social worker from 1965 to 1966.
Ms. Turner began her career as a student at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. She subsequently studied at the Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University, where she earned a Master of Social Work in 1959. She is a licensed social worker in the state of Ohio and a licensed independent social worker. Ms. Turner has written several articles in professional journals, and she is the author of "The Autobiography of Tammy," "Papa Babe's Stamp Collection" and "Joseph Carter Corbin: Educator Extraordinaire and Founder of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff."
A respected leader in the field, Ms. Turner has been affiliated with numerous professional organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has been a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the American Hospital Association, the Society for Hospital Social Work Directors, Delta Sigma Theta, the Read and Chat Literary Club, and the National Council of Negro Women. Ms. Turner has been a board member of Daybreak, Inc., and the West Dayton Neighbors for Education, and she was a member of the citizens advisory board of the Dayton Mental Health Center.
Throughout her career, Ms. Turner has been recognized for her contributions, including the Ohio NASW Lifetime Achievement Award, the Outstanding Service Award from the Ohio Association of Social Workers, and the Mary Scott Legacy Award, among others.
