Embarking on her professional path, Dr. Sutton pursued an education at Grand Rapids Junior College and graduated at the University of Michigan in 1957 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Dr. Sutton is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and child psychiatry. She was licensed to practice medicine in Michigan and Texas.
With more than 50 years of experience, Dr. Sutton has been retired since 2010, having most recently worked as the director of the child and adolescent psychiatry residency at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital and Austin State Hospital from 1972 to 2010. After graduation from medical school, she worked as a rotating intern at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI from 1957 to 1958 and completed a residency in child psychiatry in 1958 and 1962 at Hawthorn Center for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In the years from 1959 until 1961 she completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Michigan. She married a Texan in 1961, moved to Texas, and completed psychiatry training at Austin State Hospital.
Because child psychiatry patients in Texas were in buildings with adult patients, Dr. Sutton applied for federal funds to build a 60-bed children's inpatient facility that opened in 1971 and a million dollar grant to teach child care skills. This was the first state supported psychiatric inpatient facility for children in Texas.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Sutton has participated in numerous endeavors in professional circles. A reputable consultant in her profession, she found success with her written works, having contributed articles to several esteemed journals and publications, including Academic Psychiatry and Psychiatric Annals. In addition, she was affiliated with the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Genetics Society of America. Furthermore, Dr. Sutton served in the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as secretary-treasurer in 1971 and president in 1979. She also served on many committees in local, state, and national societies including board examiner in child psychiatry for the American board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and site visitor and member of the Appeals Panel for the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Sutton has accrued various accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. Among other acknowledgements, she was presented with a commendation by the Senate of Texas in 1971, a Jackson Day Award from the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1990, and a Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians.
