Dr. Gregory J. Johanson began his career as a part-time therapist with the Center for Community Mental Health in Portland, Oregon from 1979 to 1980. Following this appointment, he was the general coordinator of clinical services, director of counseling services and chaplain at Hospital Santa Maria in Baja, California from 1980 to 1981. From 1981 to 1982, he was a lecturer at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, the National University of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon and Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. He has been a pastor for United Methodist Churches in Oregon and New Jersey since 1969 and he has served as a private practice pastoral psychotherapist since 1979.
Since 1982, Dr. Gregory Johanson has worked as a contract therapist for Lutheran Family Services in Klamath Falls, Oregon and as founding psychotherapy trainer at the Hakomi Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He has been a clinical associate professor of marriage and family therapy at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain since 1998. Dr. Johanson has also been associated with the Parkmore Institute as a fellow and professor of body-mind therapy since 2010, among a number of other appointments.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Johanson received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology and philosophy from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon in 1969. Following this accomplishment, he earned his Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. From 1979 to 1982, he completed postgraduate coursework at the School of Graduate Psychology at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon. He obtained his Master of Philosophy from the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey in 1994 and his Doctor of Philosophy in psychology and religion in 1999. Dr. Johanson concluded his education with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University from 1999 to 2000.
In addition to his career, Dr. Johanson has been a guest lecturer at a number of esteemed institutions, such as the College of Education at the Western Oregon State University, the Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois, the Drew Theological School at Drew University, the Australian College of Applied Psychology, the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Pace University in New York, among others. He has served as a faculty tutor for undergraduate students at Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, New York as well as doctoral students at Union Graduate School. Dr. Johanson was also a manuscript reviewer with Zondervan Publishing House and a book review editor for the pastoral care section of Pulpit Digest from 1985 to 1990.
Dr. Gregory J. Johanson has been editor of the Hakomi Forum since 1984 and is also currently on the editorial committee of the Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling. The co-editor of the Journal of Self-Leadership, he has also contributed on the editorial committee of the International Body Psychotherapy Journal, on the editorial advisory board for the Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association and as book review editor for the Journal of Spirituality in Mental Health. He is also the author of "Grace Unfolding" in 1991, which was translated into a number of languages between 1993 and 2012. Dr. Johanson was also the editor of the books "Feed My Sheep: Sermons on Contemporary Issues in Pastoral Care," "Pastoral Care: Issues in the Pulpit" in 1984, and (with Weiss and Monda) "Hakomi Mindfulness-Centered Somatic Psychotherapy" in 2015. He has contributed numerous essays, journal articles, and book chapters and more from 1970 on.
Dr. Gregory J. Johanson is a fellow of both the American Psychotherapy Association and the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine. He has also been a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the Clinical Theology Association, the Society for Pastoral Theology, the International Pastoral Care Network for Social Responsibility, the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, the American Academy of Religion, the Forge Institute for Spirituality and Social Change and the Integral Institute. He was recognized as a Lelia S. Bortzmeyer Scholar by Willamette University in 1966 and a Dean's Award Scholar by Emory University in 1970. He was honored as a Sugerman Scholar by the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies at Drew University in 1987 as well. Dr. Johanson has previously been selected for inclusion in the 26th edition of Who's Who in the East, the 5th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and multiple editions of Who's Who in American, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
