Stern Architects from 1985 to 1986, and he maintained an private architecture practice from 1979 to 1985. From 1978 to 1979, he served as a staff architect for Johnson-Burgee Architects, and from 1977 to 1978, he was the job captain with Stephen Jacobs & Associates. Earlier in his career, Mr. Dean was a staff architect with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Architects, from 1976 to 1977.
Mr. Dean was inspired to pursue a career in architecture at an early age, having always held an interest in buildings, their construction, their history, and their impact on the people who use them or live in them. He began his career as a student at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. He subsequently joined Columbia University, where he earned a Master of Architecture in 1976. Mr. Dean is a registered architect in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
A respected voice in the industry, Mr. Dean has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. He has sustained membership in the American Institute of Architects, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and the Congress for New Urbanism. He has served on the Planning Commission and the Board of Finance for the town of Redding, CT, as well as on their Democratic Town Committee. A contributor of articles to professional journals, Mr. Dean has served as an assistant professor at Syracuse University and as an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University.
Throughout his career, Mr. Dean has been recognized for his contributions, including a recent Innovation in Design Award from Cottages and Gardens Magazine. Recognized as a William Kinne Fellow, he has been a grantee of Syracuse University and the National Endowment of the Arts.
