He previously served as founder and president of Gene Media Forum as well as a member on the Program Planning Committee of the New York State Governor's Task Force on Energy Problems. He also served for 20 years as the scientist member of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, where he chaired the Facilities Committee and the Low Level Radioactive Waste Committee. Earlier in his career, Mr. McGowan worked with such engineering organizations as American Electric Power Services Corporation, Scientific Administrator for the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems at Washington University in St. Louis, and president of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information.
Prior to starting in engineering, Mr. McGowan earned a Bachelor of Engineering from Yale University. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and serves as a board member of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, and chair of its Legal and Governance Committee. Mr. McGowan served as a science advisor to the World Economic Forum for its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Utilizing the decades of knowledge at his disposal, Mr. McGowan has contributed to a number of creative works over the years. Since the late 1960s, he has authored such books as "Distorting the Integrity of Scientific Publication," "The Dilemma of the Atomic Bomb," "Remembering Barry Commoner," "The Case for Nuclear Power: A Critical Tool for Slowing Climate Change" and "Nature's Experts: Science, Politics and the Environment, Public Understanding of Science." For his excellence in engineering, he has been recognized with a feature in Who's Who in the World. Looking toward the future, Mr. McGowan intends to experience continued success in his numerous positions.
