Now retired, Dr. Kern worked at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL as Vice President, research and graduate studies, from 1992 to 1998 and as professor of chemistry from 1993 to 1998. He began his professional teaching career as an assistant professor in chemistry at Stony Brook University from 1964 to 1966 and then as an adjunct associate professor in chemistry at The Ohio State University from 1966 to 1971. In the years since, he has served in numerous roles at several institutions, including the Battelle Memorial Institute from 1966 to 1984, the National Science Foundation from 1978 to 1986, the President's Office of Science and Technology Policy in 1986, and The Ohio State University from 1986 to 1992 as Dean, College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He has served also on numerous boards such as the Summer Research Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, the Carnegie-Mellon University Admissions Council, and the School of Many-Body Techniques in Chemistry in Seattle, among others.
Dr. Kern earned his Bachelor of Science from Carnegie Institute of Technology at the Eberly Center of Carnegie Mellon University in 1957. He went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1961 and then received a postgraduate fellowship in chemistry from Columbia University between 1961 and 1962. He served as staff member at the IBM Watson Laboratory, Columbia University, from 1962 to 1964. While at Battelle, he served as associate editor for Chemical Physics Letters from 1967 to 1981. He contributed to many referred articles in professional journals as well. He is presently an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society. Post-retirement, he co-founded Fractal Strength Partners, a macro-hedge incubator fund.
When Dr. Kern was on campus, he enjoyed discussing with students details of the Computer Science Research Network project at the National Science Foundation. On the more scientific side, he became fascinated with the quantum mechanical origin of the barrier to internal rotation in the ethane molecule. A team, assembled under the auspices of Battelle Institute, showed that the anti-symmetry requirement of molecular wave functions led to the correct sign for the barrier's value, 3 kcal/mole, measured a generation earlier. On the management side, Dr. Kern reorganized the technology transfer office at Northwestern University when Lyrica, a nerve pain and anti-seizure drug, was being developed there. Eventually, the rights to Lyrica were sold to Pfizer as it became a blockbuster choice for treatment. Northwestern's endowment benefited significantly to stand now among the Top-10 universities.
Dr. Kern has been listed in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and in several editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
