Dr. McBride served as chairman of the Purdue University Senate from 2004 to 2005. Throughout the course of his career, he has held numerous international academic appointments, which included serving as a Fulbright Lecturer with Sofia University in Bulgaria and as a lecturer with Korčula Summer School in Yugoslavia. He is most well known for serving as Secretary General of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) from 2003 to 2008 and then as President from 2008-2013.
In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in the field of education, Dr. McBride maintains involvement with the American Association of University Professors, where he previously served as president of the Purdue chapter between 1983 and 1986. He is also a former chairman of the committee on international cooperation of the American Philosophical Association, former President of the North American Society for Social Philosophy, co-founder and chairman of the board of Directors of the Sartre Society of North America, and former president of the American Society of Philosophy in the French Language. Since 2014, Dr. McBride has been a member of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences.
A respected authority in his fields of expertise, Dr. McBride is credited as an editor of "Phenomenology in a Pluralistic Context," "Sartre and Existentialism" and "Calvin O. Schrag and the Task of Philosophy after Postmodernity." Most recently, he was recognized as an editor of "Social and Political Philosophy" and "The Idea of Values." Dr. McBride has authored numerous works pertaining to his areas of interest, including "The Philosophy of Marx," "From Yugoslav Praxis to Global Pathos," "Philosophical Reflections on the Changes in Eastern Europe," "Social and Political Philosophy" and "Sartre's Political Theory."
In recognition of his contributions to philosophy and education, Dr. McBride was honored as a Decorated Chevalier with the Ordre Des Palmes Académiques. He received the Silver Medal from the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens, Greece. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. McBride has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Prior to pursuing an academic career, Dr. McBride received a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University in 1959. He went on to postgraduate studies as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Lille between 1959 and 1960. Dr. McBride attended Yale University, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and later Social Science Research Council Fellow, completing a Master of Arts in 1962 and a Ph.D. in 1964.
Early in his career, Dr. McBride served as an instructor of philosophy with Yale University for two years before he was recognized as an assistant professor in 1966. He was promoted to the role of associate professor in 1970, a position he held until 1973. During this time, Dr. McBride also briefly served as a lecturer with Northwestern University. Since 1973, he has worked as an educator with Purdue University.
