The University of North Carolina Board of Governors gave Donald Parkerson a Distinguished Professor Teaching Award.

With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Parkerson has served as a professor of history with East Carolina University since 1984. In addition to his primary teaching role, he has written extensively in his areas of expertise. He and his co-author Jo Ann Parkerson have written, "The American Teacher," "Transitions in American Education," "The Emergence of the Common School," "The Struggle for Public Education," "The Agricultural Transition in New York State" and "Assessment, Bureaucracy and Consolidation: Issues Facing Schools Today." Dr. Parkerson is also the former assistant director of the Newberry Library Family History Center.
Dr. Parkerson served as a combat veteran in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Upon completing his service, he was inspired to pursue a career in a field where he could positively impact the world, deciding to educate younger people. He pursued his own education at the University of Illinois in Chicago, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. He continued his studies with the school, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1975 and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1983.
Throughout his career, Dr. Parkerson has been recognized for his contributions. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors gave him a Distinguished Professor Teaching Award. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America. However, Dr. Parkerson is most proud of having mentored thousands of students over the years- many of whom have had very successful careers.
