A leader among the local public, Ms. Pokras most recently served as a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court for 18 years. She began her professional career as a secondary school teacher in Philadelphia, PA, and Newark, NJ, from 1957 to 1959, later starting her own private practice in law in Long Beach, CA, in 1970. During this time, she also became city councilwoman of Lakewood, CA, for four years. At the conclusion of both of these ventures, she became a judge of the Long Beach Municipal Court in 1978 before transferring to her current position. She has also served as a delegate for the California State Democratic Census Committee and the California State Convention, as well as a member of the Committee on Gender Bias in California Courts.
Ms. Pokras studied at Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University, in Glenside, PA, for one year before earning a Bachelor of Education from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1957. She went on to obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the School of Law at Pepperdine University 12 years later, graduating cum laude. The following year, she was admitted to practice law in the state of California and before the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of California and Columbia, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. Since graduating, she has devoted her time to a large number of civic causes, including the Junior League, Long Beach City College, the Long Beach Alcoholism Council, the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Long Beach Symphony, the Jewish Community Federation, the National Women's Political Caucus and the League of Women Voters.
In 1986, Ms. Pokras was honored at the National Conference for Community and Justice. Eight years later, she received the Torch of Liberty Award from the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League, and was named Woman of the Year by the National Organization of Women in Long Beach one decade later. Likewise, she was named Judge of the Year by the Long Beach Bar Association in 1987. She started the Long Beach Women's Legal Group right from her own patio. She is listed in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who of American Women.
