A believer in promoting the best psychology practices, Dr. Johnston worked as a school psychologist, a private practice family therapist and consultant in the Oak Park, IL, area for 35 years until her semi-retirement in 2016. She began her professional career as a school psychologist with Lexington Public Schools, MA, for six years, while also serving as a psychological examiner with the Harvard Pre-School Project in Cambridge, MA, in 1973. Following these appointments, she became a therapist and trainer with the Acorn Employee Assistance Program in Philadelphia for two years and then a school psychologist at Oak Park-River Forest High School in River Forest, IL, from 1981 to 1989. Throughout her career, she also served as a consultant in Philadelphia, PA, a clinical assistant professor and supervising psychologist at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, and an instructor at Boston University.
Dr. Johnston earned a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, from Manchester University in North Manchester, IN, in 1969, from which she also received an honorary doctorate in 2011. In 1970, she obtained a Master of Education in school psychology from Boston University, where she later obtained a Doctor of Education in counseling psychology in 1974. She went on to become a licensed psychologist and certified school and family psychologist, as well as an author and trainer. She has also served on numerous boards of directors for organizations such as the Oak Park Education Foundation, Parenthesis, and the DePaul Family Law Board, and received a fellowship from the National Defense Education Act.
Aside from her professional duties, Dr. Johnston has been affiliated with a number of associations related to her field, including the American Psychological Association, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Association of School Psychologists, and Psychologists for Social Responsibility, among others. An avid writer, she has also authored two books, "It Takes a Child to Raise a Parent: Stories of Evolving Child and Parent Development," published in 2013, and "Midlife Maze: A Map to Recovery and Rediscovery After Loss," published in 2017, which won a Best Books Award (2017) and International Best Book Award (2018). Also, "Midlife Maze: A Map to Recovery and Rediscovery After Loss" won first place in the Illinois Women's Press Association 2018 Mate E. Palmer Communications Contest in General Non-fiction. Furthermore, she is listed in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the Midwest and several editions of Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
