A highly accomplished nurse, Ms. Jorgensen currently holds multiple positions, including nursing home consultant, director of the student nurse intern program at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, and clinical instructor for the University of South Dakota Department of Nursing, South Dakota State University College of Nursing and South Dakota Human Services Center. Prior to these appointments, she was associate professor of nursing at the University of South Dakota. Ms. Jorgensen has also served as staff nurse and nursing supervisor at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, instructor and nursing supervisor at the University of South Dakota, and director of nursing at the South Dakota Human Services Center.
Ms. Jorgensen earned a diploma from the St. John's School of Nursing in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Marty College in 1976. She continued her studies by receiving a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota in 1980 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Creighton University in 1994.
Ms. Jorgensen has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due Award from the National Student Nurses Association in 2004, Outstanding Advisor Award from the University of South Dakota Student Leadership in 2005, District 11 Nurse of the Year Award from the South Dakota Nurses Association in 2009, Faculty Service Award from the University of South Dakota School of Health Sciences in 2013, Nurse Educator of the Year Award from the South Dakota Nurse's Association in 2013, and the Charlie Barron Lifetime Achievement Award from Yankton Mental Wellness, Inc., in 2015, among others. In addition, May 8, 2013 was proclaimed by South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard as Kathy Jorgensen Day.
Ms. Jorgensen is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, National League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association and South Dakota Nurses Association. She has contributed to dozens of books, articles and publications. In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Jorgensen was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Nursing and the 64th edition of Who's Who in America.
