OAKTON, VA, November 07, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Thomas Gregg MacCracken, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. MacCracken celebrates many years' experience in his professional field, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Since 1993, Dr. MacCracken has been an independent scholar specializing in music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. From 1991 to 1993, he was a research fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, and from 1986 to 1990 he was an assistant professor of music at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. He also served as a trustee of Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont, from 1974 to 1980 and again from 1993 to 1998, and as a board member of Early Music America from 1990 to 1994. He has been on the editorial board for the Viola da Gamba Society of America since 1996, was editor of the Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society from 1996 to 2006, and review editor for the Early Keyboard Journal from 1991 to 1996. In addition to contributing articles to professional journals and volumes of essays, Dr. MacCracken is editor of the Opera Omnia (Complete Works) edition of French Renaissance composer Jean Mouton and was co-editor of the Opera Omnia of Mouton's contemporary Mathurin Forestier. As a performer he has concertized for the past four decades on a variety of historical instruments, including harpsichord, fortepiano, and organ, baroque flute and recorder, and viola da gamba. Together with harpsichordist Vera Kochanowsky, he has released two CD recordings, "Pour 2 Clavecins" and "A Decade of Duos".
Dr. MacCracken began music lessons as a child and became a skilled musician on the piano and the flute. His academic pursuits began at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1973. While there he discovered that the field of musicology combined his two favorite areas of study, music and history, and so went on to earn a doctorate in that subject from the University of Chicago in 1985.
Currently, Dr. MacCracken is an active researcher and musician, holding memberships in organizations such as the American Musical Instrument Society, the American Musicological Society, the Viola da Gamba Society of America, and Early Music America. He has previously been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. His grandfather (John Henry MacCracken, 1875-1948) and great-grandfather (Henry Mitchell MacCracken, 1840-1918) were both listed in Who's Who in America, starting with its second edition in 1901, in recognition of their accomplishments in the field of higher education, respectively as president of Lafayette College and chancellor of New York University.
