Dr. Sobol is a recognized educator and pianist who has specialized in teaching music to special learners. Recently retiring from Nassau BOCES (The Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County) in the department of special education in 2016 after 28 years of service, she taught students with developmental disabilities including those with autism spectrum disorders. She also upheld three adjunct positions at New York University (NYU), Long Island University and Brooklyn College. In 2017, Dr. Sobol was appointed as a full-time professor of higher education at New York University and September 2018 steps up to be the new Director of Music Education (undergraduate through doctoral programs) in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
The author of "An Attitude and Approach for Teaching Music to Special Learners," Dr. Sobol's book first published in 2001 is now in its third edition since 2017. She has contributed numerous articles to various professional publications during the course of her career, developed international programs that have included "Reaching Higher with Music in Education" and "Building Bridges for Learning with Music," has hosted many speeches at international conferences, workshops, and presentations and has helped develop continuing invitations to train teachers and work with other researchers. Notably, in 2018, Dr. Sobol presented for the Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission in Prague, Czech Republic. Her autism research has also been published through ProQuest and is available worldwide to scholars interested in music research concerning individuals with intellectual development disorders.
A long time director of the Long Island Music Workshop since 1992, Dr. Sobol also performed as a pianist for the Chamber Music Series at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY and on other distinguished concert series in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas. She has been executive director of the United Cultural Convention with the American Biographical Institute since 2000, a piano adjudicator in New York since 1993, and a teacher of young and adult piano students since 1968. She has also been a guest lecturer at Hofstra University, Ithaca and St. Joseph Colleges in the New York area, and University of Waikato (Tauranga, New Zealand) and University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia), taught piano at Farmingdale State College from 1993 to 1998, and was an advisor of arts and humanities for several years for the International Biographical Center in Cambridge, England.
A longstanding member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Female Executives and the Royal Overseas League, Dr. Sobol has also been a member and chair of special learners with the New York State School Music Association since 1993 and member of the executive board and member-at-large with the New York Society for Music Teacher Education since 2006. She concurrently serves as the Portfolio Co-Chair for the New York State Regents Blue Ribbon Commission on the Arts.
Using evidence-based practice and specific instructional strategies, Dr. Sobol has become an innovative teacher who can successfully optimize students' success. She has been the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions for her work over the years, including as a 2016 honoree by the Music Educators Association of New York City, 2015 finalist of the New York State Teacher of the Year Award, 2014-2015 nominee of a Grammy Music Educators Award, 2012 Distinguished Service Award from New York State School Music Association and 2007 Colleen Channel Award from the Foundation for Illumination Global Entertainment. Dr. Sobol has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women since 2002.
Earning an Associate of Arts in liberal arts studies at Simon's Rock Early College in 1971, Dr. Sobol then studied piano performance at Mannes School of Music from 1971 to 1973 and theory studies at The Juilliard School from 1973 to 1974. She acquired a Bachelor of Arts in music and arts at the New School for Social Research in 1985, followed by a Master of Arts in music and music education at the Teachers College, Columbia University in 1987. Dr. Sobol followed up with another 60 post-graduate credits in diverse special education topics between 1988 and 2010 before ultimately earning a Doctor of Education in instructional leadership and curriculum development at St. John's University in 2014. She holds several teaching certifications as well, including a Response to the Needs of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate. A proud parent of two, who are now in their early 30s, Dr. Sobol's sons co-own their own music promotion and production company, Sobolbros LLC, while also maintaining full-time careers outside the industry. When Dr. Sobol isn't busy teaching, she enjoys the arts, especially dance and theater.
