BETHLEHEM, PA, November 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Alan W. Pense, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Pense celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Pense, professor of materials science and engineering and provost emeritus at Lehigh University, retired from academia in 1996. First hired in 1957 as a research assistant, he later became full professor in 1971, chairman of the department of metallurgy and materials engineering in 1977, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 1984, and dean in 1988. A longtime research engineer for the National Research Council since 1997, Dr. Pense also remains active as a consultant at Lehigh University.

A specialist in physical and mechanical metallurgy, Dr. Pense taught and conducted research in both these areas. He was also very involved in researching and consulting in the welding, joining and failure analysis of large structures. Notably, he spent three years as the associate director of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Research Center and was the co-author of the funding proposal that led to the establishment of Lehigh's ATLSS Research Center in 1986. Researchers at ATLSS conduct cutting-edge research into the design and materials used in bridges and other large structures. They also develop technologies that improve the performance of structures over the life cycle for which they are designed. In addition to his work with ATLSS, Dr. Pense has gained a tremendous amount of credibility for his work with stressed and fatigued bridges. He has inspected numerous cracked and failed bridges, including the Liberty Bridge and I-79 Bridge in Pittsburgh in 1979 and the second Silver Bridge in West Virginia in 1985. The original Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967, killing 40 people. Lehigh engineers conducted the forensic analysis of that failure.

During his tenure in academia, Dr. Pense has contributed more than 100 articles to various peer reviewed journals and other professional publications and has served as a member and chair of the "Welding Handbook Committee." He is the co-author of "Structure and Properties of Materials," which is now in its fourth edition. Since his retirement, he was active as a member of the board of trustees for Lehigh Valley Christian High School between 2004 and 2012. He was a member of the Board of the Evangelical Theological Seminary from 1974-1999. From 1989 until 1994, Dr. Pense served on the External Engineering Advisory Committee of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Pense was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.

An elected fellow of the American Welding Society and former Adams Memorial Lecturer and Plummer Memorial Lecturer, Dr. Pense is also an elected fellow of the American Society for Metals and longtime member of the Bridge Engineering Association, the American Society for Engineering Education and the International Institute of Welding. The recipient of numerous awards, including a Bridge Engineering Research Award from the Bridge Engineering Association in 2009, a Materials Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002, a William Hobart Medal from the American Welding Society in 1982, and several teaching awards from Lehigh University, Dr. Pense has been showcased in approximately 60 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World. Earning a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering at Cornell University, Dr. Pense then earned both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at Lehigh University in 1959 and 1962, respectively.

Married to his wife Muriel Drews Taylor since 1958, Dr. Pense has three children and four grandchildren. In retirement, he enjoys a handful of hobbies, including collecting ancient coins and model railroads.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Alan W. Pense, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
