Janet Johnson has accepted numerous grants from the National Geographic Society, the National Endowment of the Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution.

A highly esteemed history educator with more than 40 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Johnson currently serves as the Morton D. Hull distinguished service professor at the University of Chicago, a post she has held since 2003. She initially worked at the University of Chicago as an assistant professor from 1972 to 1979, an associate professor from 1979 to 1981 and full professor from 1981 to 2003. During this time, Dr. Johnson has also held the positions of director of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago from 1983 to 1989 and research associate in the department of anthropology at the Field Museum of Natural History from 1980 to 1984, 1994 to 1999 and 2003 to 2008.
In 1967, Dr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago. She concluded her studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1972, also at the University of Chicago. A member and past president of the American Research Center in Egypt, Dr. Johnson found success with her written works as well, having authored several books including "Demotic Verbal System," "Thus Wrote Onchsheshonqy" and "Quseir al-Qadim," and co-edited such publications as "Studies in Honor of G.R. Hughes" and "Life in a Multi-Cultural Society."
