Dr. Andrews has worked as a professor at the New College of Florida since 1981. He was present when the university was known as the New College of the University of South Florida until 2001, when the two institutions severed ties and the New College of Florida became an independent school as the Honors College of the Florida State University System. He began his career as a teaching assistant in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona from 1974 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1980. He then worked as an assistant professor in anthropology at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, for one year before becoming an assistant professor in anthropology at the New College of the University of South Florida in Sarasota, FL, from 1981 to 1985. He was then promoted to associate professor from 1985 to 1989 and to full professor in 1989; he was chair of its Division of Social Sciences from 1989 to 1995.
Dr. Andrews pursued an education as a student at Centro Universitario Montejo in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, from 1956 to 1964 and at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, from 1964 to 1968. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, in 1973, where he was on the Dean's List and graduated magna cum laude. He went on to attend the University of Arizona, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980, both in anthropology. He also received National Science Foundation Summer Fellowships in Arkansas and Peru in 1970 and 1971. Dr. Andrews has authored, co-authored and co-edited a total of eight books, and has contributed more than 100 book chapters, articles and reviews to professional journals. He has also served on numerous editorial boards, and has been a member of a variety of organizations in his field, including the Society for American Archaeology, the Sociedad Mexicana de Antropología, the Sociedad Española de Estudios Mayas, and the American Anthropological Association. He was awarded the State of Florida Teaching Incentive Program Award in 1996 and the State of Florida Professorial Excellence Program Award in 1998. He has also received numerous research grants from the National Geographic Society, the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, the University of South Florida, the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. (FAMSI), and the New College of Florida. He is listed in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and in three editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
