George F. Vander Voort dedicated time toward research with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear reactor.
WADSWORTH, IL, November 21, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present George F. Vander Voort with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Vander Voort celebrates many years of experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Amassing over 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Vander Voort has been a consultant to Struers Inc., Struers A/S, and about 10 other companies since 2009. Additionally, he has acted as the president of Vander Voort Consulting LLC since 1993. Beginning in 1996, he spent 13 years as the director of research and technology at Buehler Ltd. Prior to accepting this post, he found success as a specialist in metallographic analysis at Carpenter Technology Corp. from 1994 to 1996 and supervisor of materials characterization, microstructural analysis, and mechanical testing at Carpenter Technology Corp. from 1983 to 1994. His first professional role was at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, where he worked in various capacities in the metallurgical department and Homer Research Laboratories from 1967 to 1983.
With an extensive career full of impressive accomplishments, Mr. Vander Voort notes two highlights in his career that reflect his most important work. He dedicated time toward research with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear reactor. His research focused on what temperature the lower head of the unit 2 reactor reached during the 1979 incident. He completed this by correcting the metallographic studies done at Argonne National Laboratory and the Idaho Falls National Engineering Laboratory. Mr. Vander Voort is a court certified expert witness in product liability failure analysis cases.
Furthermore, Mr. Vander Voort worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an investigation of the heavily eroded structural steel from buildings 1 or 2 and 7 of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attack. The goal was to discover how structural steel from the buildings suffered holes in the beams. This was a curiosity because jet fuel that is burnt in air can only reach a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius but the melting point of the steel grades was above 1500 degrees Celsius.
Mr. Vander Voort began his academic pursuits at Drexel University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1967. At this esteemed academic institution, he served as an active member of the Drexel Technical Journal as a staff writer for five years and editor-in-chief for his junior and senior years. For three of these years, the publication was honored as the number one college technical journal by the Engineering Colleges Magazine Association. Drexel University awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005 and the Service to Our Profession Award in 2016. He subsequently studied at Lehigh University, earning a Master of Science in metallurgical and materials science in 1974. During this time, he came under the tutelage of his mentor professor Alan Pence, who helped guide his future path.
A respected voice in the industry, Mr. Vander Voort is author of 439 publications, including "Metallography: Principles and Practice" in 1984 (re-published in 1999) and "Buehler's Guide to Materials Preparation." He has taught 275 seminars and given 450 lectures in 42 countries. Moreover, he has 439 open literature publications, including 23 in Industrial Heating magazine and 59 on Vac Aero's Web site.
An active leader in his community, Mr. Vander Voort was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society and has been active with the International Metallographic Society (IMS) since 1974 and served on the board of directors, as membership chairman, secretary, vice president, and president. IMS awarded him the President's Award in 1987 and the Henry Clifton Sorby Award in 2004. He has been an active member and officer of Committee E-4 on Metallography of the American Society for Testing and Materials (now known as ASTM International) since 1979 and an active member, trustee, committee member and chairman in the American Society for Metals (now known as ASM International) since 1966. He was named a fellow of ASTM in 1987 and of ASM in 1990. He was named an honorary member of the Polish Society for Stereology in 2012. He was named a Distinguished Life Member of Alpha Sigma Mu honorary member in 2008 and has served as an officer. In 2012, he was named a fellow of the International Federation of Heat Treatment and Surface Engineers.
Throughout his career, Mr. Vander Voort has been recognized for his contributions, having been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and Who's Who in the World. He has authored seven ASTM standards, holds six patents, his micrographs have been used in calendars, on journal covers, conference publications and in other people's publications more than 179 times, and he has won 36 awards for his work in metallography contests.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, George F. Vander Voort has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
