With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Wilson has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center since 2011, having been a professor of internal medicine since 1968. Prior to obtaining this role, he was an instructor of internal medicine with the National Heart Institute from 1960 to 1961, where he was a clinical associate from 1958 to 1960. Earlier in his career, Dr. Wilson was an intern and resident of internal medicine with Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1955 to 1958.
Dr. Wilson began his career as a student at the University of Texas, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1951. He continued his studies at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1955. A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Wilson has also served as editor of the Clinical Investigation journal and as a senior assistant surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service.
A respected voice in his community, Dr. Wilson has been affiliated with a number of organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. A fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Endocrine Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Dr. Wilson has also been active with the American Philosophical Society, the Association of American Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wilson has been recognized for his contributions. The Endocrine Society gave him an Oppenheimer Award and a Koch Award, the Association of American Physicians gave him a Kober Medal and a Pincus Medal, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences gave him the Amory Prize.
